Jason Statham Swam With Real Sharks For New Movie, Because Of Course

When you're used to jumping off balconies and wrestling with The Rock, turns out real-life sharks aren't all that scary.

At least, not to tough guy Jason Statham.

To prepare for his upcoming action film "The Meg," in which he faces down a prehistoric 5-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon, the action star says he swam with real sharks. And that he found it "tranquil."

He told EW that getting close to "20 or 30" enormous bull sharks in Fiji was "a spectacular moment." And the "Fast and Furious star" didn't stop there. "To swim in close proximity to a big, three-meter shark, is to be recommended to all and everyone," he enthused.

He admitted that he was anxious on the boat beforehand. "But once you get in the ocean, things take a very different turn," he sad. "You get very relaxed, and when you're in their environment, it's quite a tranquil sort of thing, the anxiety goes away completely. It's remarkable to experience. All of the fear — or the perceived fear — is done in your own head before you get down there with them. Once you're swimming down there with all the other divers, it's phenomenal."

He added, "It's one of the greatest experiences you could have, for me anyway."

"The Meg" hits theaters on August 10.
