'Wonder Woman' Has a New Director: Patty Jenkins

64th Annual Directors Guild Of America Awards - Arrivals

Onetime "Thor: The Dark World" director Patty Jenkins is changing comics allegiances, switching from Marvel to DC to helm the upcoming Wonder Woman movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jenkins just closed a deal with Warner Bros. to take over the project from Michelle MacLaren, who departed the flick just days ago amid creative differences with the studio. Warner Bros. was reportedly eager to have a woman helm the film, and looked specifically for female directors for the project.

Jenkins, who directed "Monster" (which netted Charlize Theron a Best Actress Oscar) and the pilot of AMC series "The Killing," had previously been attached to "Thor" sequel "The Dark World," but in a similar situation to MacLaren, left the project over creative differences with Marvel Studios. (Ironically, replacement director Alan Taylor also had some well-documented creative issues with that film.) She would have been the first female to direct a tentpole superhero flick, a distinction that should stick this time around.

Here's hoping Jenkins's hiring is the final one, and work on the long-awaited "Wonder Woman" can get underway. The flick, starring Gal Gadot, is tentatively scheduled for a June 2017 release.
