'Mad Max: Fury Road' Without Special Effects Is Still Bonkers

Mad Max Fury Road"Mad Max: Fury Road" was a stunning visual masterpiece, which won most of the technical categories at the Oscars last year (including production design, costume design, and sound editing), but it lost Best Visual Effects to "Ex Machina" — not much of a surprise, considering director George Miller focused so heavily on practical effects.

There were still some visual effects added, of course, but even without them, "Mad Max: Fury Road" is still jaw-dropping stuff. ESportsTV (h/t Uproxx) spliced together a compilation of raw footage, sans CGI, and it looks nearly as good as the final movie.
Those skull-pounding crashes, fearsome explosions, the flamethrowers, the aerial work — all of that was done real-time. Of course, CGI added wonderful touches to the movie, but it's amazing to see how much of it Miller was able to accomplish with practical effects.
