Poultry in motion! It's raining hen! We're truly in cluck, guys, 'cause "Chicken Run 2" is coming home to roost!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Aardman Animations is officially working on a sequel to the 2000 movie "Chicken Run," which remains the highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time. They said StudioCanal and Pathe are also on board.
It sounds very early in the process, so it's possible the sequel would come out in time for the 20th anniversary. That's a guess, though. But it's exciting to think fans may finally see how life has been treating Ginger, Rocky, and friends in the past two decades.
THR said "details of the film are scarce at the moment, with the project not yet ready to hit markets." They added that, "Although it hasn't been confirmed, 'Chicken Run 2' will likely go into production at Aardman's studio in Bristol after it wraps on Shaun the Sheep movie Farmageddon, the sequel to 2015's Shaun the Sheep the Movie, which is due for release next year."
Sam Fell ("Flushed Away") is set to direct, and the original writers are back to write the sequel script. Original directors -- and Aardman co-founders -- Peter Lord and David Sproxton will executive produce the movie.
Not every movie needs a sequel, but considering how popular "Chicken Run" remains after 18 years, it's only surprising it has taken this long to return to the story.
"Chicken Run" is still the highest-grossing stop-motion film to date, with a worldwide gross of $224,834,564. That puts it fairly far ahead of No. 2, "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" (2005), which earned $192,610,372; and No. 3, "Coraline" (2009), which made $124,596,398.
