'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Tracking For $200 Million-Plus Opening Weekend

"The Last Jedi"? Try "the biggest Jedi."

Domestic box office tracking reports indicate that "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" could rake in more than $200 million in its opening weekend, starting December 15. Only a few movies have achieved that feat — its episodic predecessor "The Force Awakens," "The Avengers," and "Jurassic World."

"The Force Awakens" currently holds the U.S. opening weekend record with $248 million. Last December's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" took in an impressive $155 million, but as a standalone, it was never expected to match the episodic saga numbers.

It's possible "The Last Jedi" could top "The Force Awakens," though not highly likely. The latter brought the "Star Wars" franchise back to the big screen after a long absence, and was much anticipated following the disappointing prequel trilogy.

"The Force Awakens" eventually took in more than $2 billion worldwide and dominated the box office for weeks. Early footage on "Last Jedi" looks good, and it seems Lucasfilm is happy with director Rian Johnson's work, since they tasked him with creating an entirely new trilogy.
