Last week, news broke that original "
Mary Poppins" stars Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke were being
courted for cameos in Disney's upcoming sequel, "Mary Poppins Returns." But it seems that no one has approached Van Dyke about the possibility yet -- and he's not entirely sure he'd want to appear in the flick, either.
That's the word from the actor, who touched on the subject during an
interview with The Mirror. When asked whether he'd be interested in appearing in the high-profile flick, which stars Emily Blunt as the titular nanny and costars Lin-Manuel Miranda and Meryl Streep, Van Dyke didn't sound too enthusiastic about the prospect.
"I'd have to see the script," the actor told The Mirror. "Without Walt Disney, and the Sherman brothers to write the score, and Julie, it will be difficult, I think."
Van Dyke reminisced about the process of making the 1964 original, which went on to nab 13 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture) and take home five statuettes (including Best Actress for Andrews).
"Every day we came to work and we knew there was something magical going on," the actor recalled. "There was such a spirit."
As for the prospects of "Returns," Van Dyke was blunt but diplomatic when giving his thoughts about how it would fare.
"Sequels are traditionally not as good as the first," he told The Mirror. "But I wish them well."
Here's hoping for fans' sake that he changes his tune and sings on for at least a small cameo. He'll have some time to make his decision: "Marry Poppins Returns" isn't due in theaters until December 25, 2018.
