"Piper," a six-minute short film, will play in the previews before "Finding Dory," which arrives in theaters June 17. According to Entertainment Weekly, which got the first look photo and details, the story is about a hungry baby sandpiper who is afraid of water.
Pixar animator/"Piper" director Alan Barillaro told EW that inspiration for the short came from the shore close to Pixar Studios in Emeryville, CA. Barillaro said he noticed birds avoiding the water but returning between the waves to get food:
"Seeing the way these sandpipers react to waves and run, I always felt, 'Gosh, that's a film, that's a character.' It's always fun to show a world we're familiar with but from a different perspective. We've all been to the beach, but have we ever viewed water from just an inch off the sand? That could be very fearful from a bird's perspective."
