The promo reintroduces us to the titular heroes -- Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael all get some sweet shots wielding their signature weapons -- while also bringing in a bunch of new elements and characters that are making their first appearances this century, but should be intimately familiar to older fans. Baddies Bebop and Rocksteady, hockey stick-loving vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell, who gets his flirt on with Megan Fox's April O'Neil), and the Turtle Van all have moments in the spotlight, as the Turtles must once again band together to save New York.
"What are you, superheroes?" a skeptical Laura Linney (yes, that Laura Linney), playing some sort of law enforcement officer, asks the gang.
"Just four brothers who hate bullies, and love this city," Raph replies.
The addition of Run-D.M.C.'s "It's Tricky" also adds some levity to the proceedings, and we have a feeling that that's exactly what filmmakers intended. More than the first flick, "TMNT 2" is giving us some serious '90s cartoon vibes, and that's exactly the right tone for this oddball series. Here's hoping the rest of the film lives up to the promise of the trailer.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" hits theaters on June 3, 2016.
