New 'Sherlock' Special Gets Theatrical Release (With Bonus Footage)

The idea may seem elementary (sorry), but "Sherlock" has never had a theatrical release before now. The upcoming Victorian-era special, "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride," will get a limited release in U.S. and U.K. theaters after it premieres on TV this January.

The BBC and PBS Masterpiece revealed, over the weekend, that the special will air on TV on Friday, January 1, 2016. This is the first time both the U.S. and the U.K. are sharing a premiere date. (The Special Relationship at work!)

According to Entertainment Weekly the movie will then be in theaters for two days, on Tuesday, January 5 and Wednesday, January 6. If you head out to the theater to see "The Abominable Bride," the episode comes with 20 minutes of additional footage, including a guided set tour of 221B Baker Street and a short "making-of" feature with stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. It's like getting a Blu-ray copy of the episode in the theater as it airs.

The special is expected to play at more than 500 theaters across the U.S., and tickets will be available starting on November 6. A regular "Sherlock" Season 4 is also expected to start in early 2016.

What do you think? Will you try and see this (with the bonus footage) in a theater or just watch it at home?
