Martin Freeman Joins 'Captain America: Civil War'

The Paley Center For Media Presents:
Martin Freeman is having a moment: The Emmy-winning actor just joined the cast of "Captain America: Civil War."

The "Hobbit" star will make his Marvel movie debut in "Civil War," in an undisclosed role. While Freeman has made a name for himself on the small screen, with roles in "Fargo," "Sherlock," and the original British version of "The Office," he's been graduating to bigger fare as of late thanks to the "Hobbit" trilogy, and joining the MCU juggernaut is a big coup.

"From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in 'The Office,' Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," said Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige in a statement on Marvel's website. "We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Freeman's "Sherlock" co-star Benedict Cumberbatch has also recently joined up with Marvel: he's playing the titular role in the upcoming "Doctor Strange." While Freeman won't exactly be headlining "Civil War" -- that job will go to Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) -- we imagine he'll be a strong addition to the eclectic ensemble.

"Civil War" will pick up where "Avengers: Age of Ultron" left off, and feature a clash between Cap and Tony Stark. It's slated to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
