Elle Woods may soon be bringing her brand of girl power back to the big screen: "Legally Blonde 3" is reportedly currently in development.
The scoop comes from Deadline, which reports that studio MGM is working on a threequel, with star Reese Witherspoon returning to both headline the feature and produce. According to the trade, the project is "coming together quickly," and will reunite many folks who worked behind the scenes on the first flick.
Original screenwriters Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith and Karen McCullah are currently negotiating to pen the new script, and the plan is to "begin writing immediately," per Deadline. Producer Marc Platt is also returning, and the next step is finding a director.
Though plot details are not being shared just yet, Deadline reports that "Legally Blonde 3" "will be much in the spirit of" the 2001 original. "Legally Blonde" featured Witherspoon as the pink-obsessed Woods, who gets into Harvard Law to win back her ex, and discovers that she's a pretty awesome attorney-in-training -- and doesn't need that lame guy.
Here's the vibe the new production is going for, according to the trade:
The intention here is to make this more about female empowerment, a message that hits at a fortuitous time in the culture. The feeling is to draw back in the audience that grew up with the original film and find a new global audience.
Witherspoon, who's still pretty adept at the Bend and Snap, has long wanted to add another entry to the series, which ended way back in 2003 with the release of the sequel "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde." Just last year, the star said that she would be on board for a potential third film.
We'll keep our fingers crossed that her -- and our -- dream comes true soon.
