Well, it had to happen sooner or later -- "Avengers: Infinity War" has finally been dethroned. After staying atop the box office since its debut in late April (and breaking virtually every box office record in the process), the Marvel Studios superhero romp has been usurped by ... another superhero movie based on a Marvel property.
"Deadpool 2," once again starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular, fourth-wall-breaking antihero, debuted to $125 domestically (shy of the first film's $132.4 million launch in February 2016), which was the third biggest opening of the year (behind "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Black Panther") and the second biggest start for an R-rated film (after the first film). While early estimates pegged the movie at topping the $130 million mark, especially considering that it was the widest release in Fox history (it played in a whopping 4,349 theaters). But it just didn't happen. Internationally, the movie performed even better, bringing in $176 million, for the biggest Fox opening ever (and it hasn't even been scheduled for release in China yet).
Elsewhere, frothy comedy "Book Club" opened at #3, with $12.5 million, slightly above predictions, while family film "Show Dogs" whimpered with a $6 million debut, enough for it to chart at #6. The rest of the week were holdovers from previous weeks, many of them falling significantly from the previous week ("Life of the Party" fell 57%, while "Breaking In" tumbled 63%).
Next weekend should see an uptick in sales. Not only is it a long Memorial Day weekend, but it also marks the start of "Solo: A Star Wars Story," the highly anticipated origin story for the everyone's favorite rascally rogue.
