Jessica Chastain wants to make art, not war in the first trailer for "Woman Walks Ahead."
Based on a true story, the movie stars Chastain as Catherine Weldon, a widow and artist who travels from Brooklyn to North Dakota in the summer of 1889 to paint the famous Chief Sitting Bull (Michael Greyeyes).
As Catherine and Sitting Bull bond, tensions are rising between the Lakota tribe and the U.S. Army. The latter also sees Catherine as a threat.
"They all think that you and me are planning some kind of uprising," she says. "The only battle I've ever fought against is insignificance."
"Woman Walks Ahead" debuted at the Toronto Film Festival last fall, where it received positive reviews. The role seems in line with the meaty, interesting biographical fare that Chastain has done so well in the past, most recently her Golden Globe-nominated performance in "Molly's Game." And the movie features Sam Rockwell, pre-Oscar win for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri."
"Woman Walks Ahead" premieres on DirecTV on May 31 and opens in theaters June 29.
