'Avengers 4' & 'Infinity War' Will Be 'Very Different,' Like Two Separate Genres

"Avengers 3" and "Avengers 4" were filmed back-to-back, and the titles were once called Part 1 and Part 2. But don't go thinking "Avengers 4" will be a continuation of "Infinity War." It sounds like it will be a very different movie, with the word "different" emphasized several times by the team.

Here's what screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely told Toronto Sun about the two movies:

"They are very different," McFeely says. "They nearly feel like two different genres."

"Yeah," Markus adds. "They are two very different kinds of movies. Tonally and structurally."

Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man) added, "The fact that they could break these two stories and make them as different as they are is, to me, the single greatest story [I've read]."

That said, Tom Holland told the Toronto Sun there was enough scene overlap where it wasn't always clear which movie they were shooting.

"I mean, I've asked questions like, 'Which film is this in?' And the Russo brothers go, 'We don't know yet.' It's been a bizarre process but a really, really amazing one at the same time."

A few months ago, Marvel boss Kevin Feige told Vanity Fair "Avengers 4" will have something unique to a superhero movie: "a finale." He added, "There will be two distinct periods: Everything before 'Avengers 4' and everything after. I know it will not be in ways people are expecting."

We know a huge MCU shakeup is coming after "Avengers 4," but the title of that movie is a spoiler of its own. That's why we don't know it yet -- Feige said it wouldn't be revealed until after "Avengers: Infinity War," to save the surprise. How long they'll wait after "Infinity War" to reveal the title we don't know.

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo directed fans to "Captain America: Civil War" for "a hint as to the direction" of "Avengers 4," specifically saying to check out a five-minute sequence around a piece of technology. (That "hint" was in response to leaks that suggested a time travel storyline.) Anthony Russo further teased "Avengers 4" to Empire (via Digital Spy), saying, "It's the Question Mark film. It's more of an epic adventure in the classic sense, with huge emotional stakes."

"Huge emotional stakes" has us prepared to sob for our favorites.

"Avengers: Infinity War" opens in theaters April 27th. "Avengers 4" opens May 3, 2019.
