Jay and Mark Duplass, the indie filmmakers behind The One I Love," "The Overnight," "Creep," have signed a big deal with Netflix for their next four movies.
"Turns out when you make films for Netflix, millions of people all over the world watch them. This is not a terrible thing for an independent filmmaker," said the Duplass brothers in a statement.
The first untitled project is a comedy starring Mark Duplass and Ray Romano and is described as a "bittersweet bromance about friendship, mortality, and made-up sports." It was written by the brothers and directed by Alex Lehmann. t.
The company and the brothers have a long working history, going back to 2005 when Netflix acquired their first feature film "The Puffy Chair."
In 2015, the brothers signed a streaming deal with Netflix for their films, including "Blue Jay," "Take Me," "Creep 2," and the upcoming "Duck Butter" and "Outside In." They also executive-produced the platform's documentary series "Wild Wild Country," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and will begin streaming March 16.
They are not entirely exclusive to Netflix; HBO has ordered a second season of their anthology series "Room 104" and a third season of their animated comedy "Animals."
The brothers join other Netflix film stars, including Adam Sandler, who extended his deal last year. On the television side, the streaming service has locked down mega deals with prolific producers Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy.
"Its a ton of work for the free @Netflix membership, but totally worth it!" Jay Duplass joked on Twitter.
