Patty Jenkins is returning to direct "Wonder Woman 2" and is on the verge of becoming the highest-paid female director ever.
After overseeing the smash hit "Wonder Woman," which has grossed $800 million worldwide, Jenkins seemed a lock to take on the sequel. But at Comic-Con last month, while Warner Bros. announced the sequel, its release date (Dec. 13, 2019), and star Gal Gadot's return, the studio did not announce Jenkins' return.
Now, Deadline reports that the Warner Bros. is thisclose to finalizing a deal with Jenkins. Apparently, Jenkins was holding out for a bigger payday, "substantially more and the same as a male director would receive after such a box office coup." That would make her the highest-paid female director in Hollywood.
Jenkins likely had a fairly low salary on the first movie, since her previous credit was 2003's "Monster," a small indie movie (though it did garner a Best Actress Oscar win for Charlize Theron). But the runaway success of "Wonder Woman," not just commercially but critically, has now launched Jenkins into the director stratosphere.
And she already has ideas on where the sequel can go. "The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right," Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly. "She's Wonder Woman. She's got to come to America. It's time."
