Wonder Woman will likely be facing off with Cold War Soviet villains instead of German warmongers in the sequel. According to Screen Rant, the follow-up to this year's blockbuster will be set in the '80s, aka the era of such classic Cold War cinematic showdowns as the original "Red Dawn" and "Rocky IV."
The site reports: "According to production details Screen Rant has learned, the story of 'Wonder Woman 2' will be another historical adventure prior to the modern day DCEU. Set during the 1980s, the film will send Diana against the forces of Soviet Union in the closing days of the Cold War."
We await scenes of Gal Gadot adjusting to big hair and New Wave.
Producer Geoff Johns is developing the script with director Patty Jenkins, who has yet to make her expected return to the franchise official.
And [SPOILER] another major "Wonder Woman" player looks set to return. If you thought you saw the last of dashing Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), word is that -- hurrah! -- he will be back for the sequel.
How they'll explain his return remains to be seen, including the fact that even if he didn't die in the first film, he'd now be about 70 years older. Or he'd be miraculously unaged, which would be just one more reason for people to continue to mix up Steve Trevor and Steve Rogers.
If you recall, the TV series starring Lynda Carter, which ran from 1975-1979 was originally set in the 1940s, with later seasons set in the '70s, so we've yet to see Wonder Woman in the MTV era.
No release date has been set yet for "Wonder Woman 2."
