"It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved friend, husband, father and grandfather, Harvey passed away peacefully last night following his battle with cancer," Atkin's agent Larry Goldhar said in a statement.
Atkin broke out in Ivan Reitman's classic comedy "Meatballs," playing camp director Morty Melnick opposite Bill Murray's counselor Tripper Harrison. He had a unique, memorable look, thanks to his mustache, glasses, and prominent nose.
He went on to play Sergeant Ronald Coleman in "Cagney & Lacey," and Judge Alan Ridenour in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," and the original "Law & Order." He most recently appeared in "Suits" as a judge. Atkin also did a lot of voice work for various animated series.
Atkin is survived by wife Celia, daughter Lisa, son Danny, three sisters, and five grandchildren.
