Jason Statham's "Fate of the Furious" character, Deckard Shaw, gets into quite the brawl in the franchise's latest movie, and it turns out writer Chris Morgan originally saw it unfolding differently for him.
The tough character wasn't at risk of meeting his untimely end, but he was going to get out of the situation in another (very over-the-top) way. During an interview with Slash Film, Morgan revealed the specifics of an option he previously considered and how it was reminiscent of "Furious 7." (Warning: There are spoilers ahead if you haven't yet seen the film.)
The scene in question is a big fight that takes after Shaw and his brother Owen (Luke Evans) manage to board an airplane in midair. Owned by the villain Cipher (Charlize Theron), the plane is full of shady characters. That leaves the brothers to take them all on to save the youngest Toretto, the infant son of Dom (Vin Diesel).
In an earlier version, Morgan revealed that Shaw was going to eliminate the threats, and then make a crazy exit we've seen before: a car rolling out of the back of a plane.
"He straps that kid in [to a car seat], gets in [the car], and rolls it out the back," Morgan told Slash Film, "and they do the car going out like we did in 'Furious 7,' but he's got the baby in it, and the baby is laughing the whole way."
While the car seat for the baby is great foresight and all, that scene ending just seems a little too absurd. There might be a lot of things that aren't exactly realistic in the Fast and Furious franchise, but a stunt like that would likely not result in laughter so much as shaken baby syndrome. Leaving it out was probably not a bad call.
"The Fate of the Furious" opened in theaters on April 14.
