Red pill or blue pill? Looks like "The Matrix" is taking the former and falling down the rabbit hole.
The 1999 sci-fi blockbuster is being eyed for a reboot by Warner Bros., according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project is in the very early stages, but sources tell THR that Zak Penn has been hired to write a treatment and that Michael B. Jordan ("Creed") is under consideration to star.
The Wachowski siblings, who wrote and directed the original and its two sequels, are not involved, though the studio would likely want their blessing.
The original "Matrix" starred Keanu Reeves as Neo, a computer programmer who realizes that human beings live in a simulated reality while their bodies are harvested for energy by machines. The movie was a surprise hit and became iconic for its special effects, like "bullet time."
THR notes that Warner Bros. wants to take a page from the Lucasfilm book in exploring the wider "Matrix" universe, perhaps by making a Morpheus prequel.
