Exactly five months after she shocked the world by filing for divorce from husband Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie is finally breaking her silence on the issue, speaking about her high-profile separation for the first time in a new interview.
While talking to the BBC about her new film, the Cambodia-set Khmer Rouge drama "First They Killed My Father," the actress-director briefly touched on the subject of her divorce. When asked if she had any comment on the matter, Jolie replied that she "[didn't] want to say very much about that."
The visibly emotional actress added, " ... [I]t was a very difficult time, and we are a family. And we will always be a family. And we will get through this time, and hopefully be a stronger family for it."
Asked how she was coping with the divorce -- which was reportedly propelled by an alleged incident between Pitt and one of the couple's children, though details of their court proceedings will be sealed from the public -- Jolie noted that her situation was not unique, and reiterated that she remained committed to her family.
"Many, many people find themselves in this situation," the actress told the BBC. "My whole family, we've all been through a difficult time. My focus is my children, our children. And my focus is finding [my] way through [this situation]. We are and forever will be a family, and so that is how I am coping. I'm coping with finding a way through to make sure that this somehow makes us stronger and closer."
Jolie and Pitt first began dating in 2005, and were married in August 2014. They have six children.
