Some of this year's biggest movies are one step closer to Oscar.
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Science announced the shortlist for the Best Visual Effects category, and it's full of major blockbusters like "The Jungle Book," "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," and the soon-to-be-huge "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." And in an unusual move, the animated feature "Kubo and the Two Strings" made the list.
Last year, robot drama "Ex Machina" took the prize.
Later this month, a committee will further narrow down the list to 10 contenders. Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 24.
Here's the shortlist:
Alice Through the Looking Glass
Arrival
The BFG
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Captain America: Civil War
Deadpool
Deepwater Horizon
Doctor Strange
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Independence Day: Resurgence
The Jungle Book
Kubo and The Two Strings
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Passengers
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Star Trek Beyond
Suicide Squad
Sully
Warcraft
X-Men: Apocalypse
