Veteran actor
Peter Vaughan, who starred in television, movies, and stage productions for seven decades, has died at the age of 93.
Vaughan was best known for playing "Grouty" Grout in the '70s BBC sitcom "Porridge" and, more recently, Maester Aemon Targaryen in
"Game of Thrones."
His agent, Sally Long-Innes, said in a statement, "This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan has passed away at approximately 10.30 [GMT] this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him."
After serving in World War II, Vaughan embarked on an acting career in the 1950s. He appeared in movies including "The Naked Runner," "The French Lieutenant's Woman," and "The Remains of the Day."
In television, he made a name for himself with "Porridge," but also had roles in "Citizen Smith," "Our Friends in the North," and "Bleak House." And he appeared in five seasons of "Game of Thrones" before his character passed away of old age.
Vaughan reflected on his most famous roles in a
Sunday Post interview in June. "People talk about Grouty but, good heavens, the fan mail I get from all over the world because of Game of Thrones is enormous," he said.
"It's been an absolute privilege to have worked on it for the past five years at my time of life because it's absolutely first-class."
