'The Dark Tower' Movie Just Got Postponed, But That's Good News

Roland Deschain (Idris Elba) in Columbia Pictures' THE DARK TOWER.Phew! It's often cause for concern when a movie needs to be rescheduled for more work, but not for "The Dark Tower."

The Stephen King adaptation starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey wrapped filming in late July, Entertainment Weekly reported, and it was scheduled for release on February 17, 2017. But sources told EW that Sony and company are pushing the release date to summer 2017, deciding -- perhaps belatedly -- that post-production on the $60 million film was being rushed too much and couldn't be done justice by February.

"It's a very fiscally responsible budget, and trying to stay in budget to make money and stay profitable means the VFX won't be finished in time," a source told EW. "Now that there's more time, they're not paying rush charges to get the effects where they need to be."

Considering February is pretty much a dead zone for movies, and summer is where the blockbusters live, it's hard not to see this as a win-win. EW added that the extra time also gives the studio and cast more time to publicize the movie (there isn't even a trailer out yet) and build momentum for what is hoped to be a multi-movie franchise with a TV spinoff already in the works.

So even though fans may be disappointed to cross off that February release date, this is positive news in the big picture scheme. Then again, if "The Dark Tower" ends up completely steamrolled by one of the many summer 2017 superhero movies or blockbuster sequels, the studio may regret the decision. But it's good news for now.
