According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia Pictures is developing a reboot of the 1997 film based on Robert A. Heinlein's novel and directed by Paul Verhoeven. To pen the script, the studio has hired Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the writers behind the upcoming "Baywatch" movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Zac Efron.
Heinlein's novel follows a young soldier who fights against alien bugs. Verhoeven's adaptation was a more satirical take and explored themes like war culture and propaganda films. It was not a box office hit at the time, but went on to gain a cult following.
Columbia reportedly wants a more faithful adaptation of the novel, which could generate controversy. The book has been accused of containing coded racism and promoting fascism. On Twitter, fans expressed dismay at a straight take on "Starship Troopers":
A non-satirical STARSHIP TROOPERS reboot is about the worst goddamn idea I've ever heard. Thanks, 2016.

#StarshipTroopers is being rebooted. If its not a hyper violent Nazi future like the original I don't want it.
