"Suicide Squad" is on track to take in $130 to $140 million this weekend at the box office, which would smash the August record held by "Guardians of the Galaxy."
If "Suicide Squad" manages to earn the higher figure, it'll beat "Finding Dory" for the third biggest opening this year, behind "Captain America: Civil War" ($179 million) and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" ($166 million).
Strong early ticket sales and buzz indicate "Suicide Squad" will almost certainly be the first movie with a $100 million-plus opening. Reviews have yet to come out, but even negative ones are unlikely to put much of a dent in the total.
"Suicide Squad" has been a beast on social media — comScore puts it at No. 1, ahead of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," with 2.1 million conversations — thanks to the combination of familiar characters like the Joker, the unique take of focusing on villains, and a savvy marketing plan.
