Excitement over "
Suicide Squad" has been percolating for more than a year now, and with the flick finally set to hit theaters next month, industry analysts are getting giddy, too, over the film's sky-high box office potential.
According to TheWrap, "Suicide Squad" is currently tracking to shatter August box office records, including dethroning that month's reigning opening weekend champ, "Guardians of the Galaxy," which pulled in $94.3 million in 2014. "Squad" is expected to easily top that, with early projections pushing it well over $100 million.
The exact figure it's expected to make is a bit fuzzy so far out from opening weekend, but some numbers are running as high as $120 million. General consensus pushes that figure closer to $115 million, though, which is the widely-viewed expectation among analysts right now.
But as moviegoers have proven, early analysis can swiftly change when eager audiences get in front of a flick, as was proven with "Finding Dory" last month. Ahead of its release, the Pixar sequel was also tracking to take in
approximately $115 million; instead, it swam away with a whopping $135 million (and
a bunch of records, too), easily outpacing expectations. The same could happen for "Suicide Squad," which has been courting filmgoers for months now with
buzzy teasers and an in-your-face cast of characters.
As TheWrap notes, it's seems unlikely that "Squad" will match the opening frame of fellow DC property "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," which pulled in $166 million back in March. But this ragtag skwad has already proven that it's got audiences' attentions. Now it just has to seal the deal.
"Suicide Squad" hits theaters on August 5.
