"
Captain America: Civil War" is already off to a great domestic debut, soaring to $25 million at
the Thursday box office.
The threequel didn't manage to beat previous Marvel outing "Avengers: Age of Ultron" in preview numbers, just squeaking under that flick's $27.6 million Thursday total from 2015, though it did outdo "Ultron" in IMAX screenings: "Civil War" earned $3.1 million in the large format theaters, versus "Ultron"'s $3 million.
"Civil War" is currently tracking to have a monster opening weekend stateside, with some estimates indicating the flick could clear the $200 million mark by Sunday night. It's already earned more than that overseas, pulling in $200.2 million, and counting. The flick also opens this weekend in China, where it's expected to generate huge numbers as well.
Insiders are expecting "Civil War" to perform similarly to "Ultron" throughout its theatrical run; the latter flick hauled in $191.3 million on its opening weekend, and earned a total of $1.4 billion worldwide. Deadline reports that some experts are questioning whether Disney is cutting into its own business by releasing "Civil War" during the still-hot run of "The Jungle Book," which could pull moviegoers away from its new flick; others insist that while the films do have some audience overlap, Marvel fandom should show up en masse for Cap and co.
We'll see how everything shakes out when the smoke clears on Sunday. "Captain America: Civil War" is in theaters now.
