Man Arrested for Failing to Return 'Freddy Got Fingered' in 2002, Tom Green Responds

should pay anyone who sat through "Freddy Got Fingered," never mind someone arrested for keeping it for 14 years.

James Meyers, 37, of Concord, North Carolina apparently rented the movie on VHS in 2002 and never returned it. It's now 2016, and he was just arrested and charged with failure to return rental property, after cops pulled him over for a busted tail-light. Let no one say the local police are not thorough!

According to WSCOTV news, the misdemeanor comes with a fine of up to $200. Meyers now has to go to court on April 27 to answer the charge, even though the rental store itself closed down.

The whole story is absurd, but it's also a lot funnier than "Freddy Got Fingered." Meyers told the news station that he was driving his daughter to school when a Concord PD officer pulled him over for the busted tail-light. Then things got weird. The cop returned to ask Meyers to step out of the vehicle, and broke the bad news:

"The officer said, 'I don't know how to tell you this but there's a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently you rented the movie "Freddy Got Fingered" and never returned it.' I thought he was joking," said Meyers.

Meyers said officers were polite about it, and let him take his daughter to school, it's not like they dragged him away on the spot. They probably couldn't believe what was happening either. But Meyers was later arrested and -- for the first time in his life -- put in handcuffs. Meyers said this wasn't even the first time he had been pulled over since the warrant for his arrest was issued 14 years ago, but for some reason it's now a thing.

The best part is that word got to Tom Green, who directed and starred in the 2001 comedy. He talked about the incident on an Australian TV news show, since he's Down Under for a comedy tour, and said he's willing to help Meyers out. "If it's 200 bucks of course I'll pay it for him, just for the principle of the thing," Green said.

Meyers is just hoping the charges get dismissed.

But let this be a warning to all cinema fans old enough to have ever been to a video store -- make sure your tail-lights are in order or you too may be arrested for that old Blockbuster tape at the back of the bureau.
