After years of radio silence from the "
Indiana Jones" filmmakers -- and
some juicy rumors about a possible franchise reboot starring
Chris Pratt --
Disney has decided to stick with the original one-two punch of
Harrison Ford and
Steven Spielberg, and has officially announced that the duo will reunite for "Indiana Jones 5."
The as-yet-untitled flick already has a release date in place, and will hit theaters on July 19, 2019. There's no word on other casting (could Pratt perhaps pop up in a supporting role, in a wink to those red-hot rumors?), and no plot has been revealed just yet, but still, this is big news, and we can't wait to see Ford don Jones's iconic fedora once again.
"Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can't wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019," said Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, in a press release. "It's rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn't be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven."
It's been almost eight years since the last "Indy" flick hit theaters, though "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" wasn't exactly a critic or fan favorite. Still, anytime Ford and Spielberg get together, it's exciting, and we're optimistic that Disney can breathe some much-needed new life into this franchise like they did with "Star Wars," which was due for a creative resurgence after the much-maligned prequels. Our fingers are crossed that "Indy 5" will do for the "Jones" series what "The Force Awakens" did for "Star Wars."
