Johnny Depp claims he "tortured' 19-year-old
Leonardo DiCaprio while they shot the amazing must-see
Lasse Hallström film
"What's Eating Gilbert Grape," but from here it sounds like Leo was the annoying one.
JDepp was presented the Maltin Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival late last week, and he discussed Leo and the 1993 movie. "It was a hard time for me, that film, for some reason. I don't know why," Depp said (via
People). That's when he said, of Leo, "I tortured him. I really did. He was always talking about these videos games, you know? I told you it was kind of a dark period. 'No, I will not give you a drag of my cigarette while you hide from your mother again, Leo.'"
If Leo was talking about video games and trying to bum cigarettes while he hid from his mother (sorry, but LOL), can you really blame Johnny for dismissing him? Doesn't sound like torture, although maybe Johnny is leaving out some of the harsher bits.

Leo gave a fantastic breakthrough performance in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," earning his first Academy Award nomination. Johnny stopped joking about torture long enough to praise this year's Oscar frontrunner. "I'd say the absolute truth is that I respect Leo a lot. He worked really hard on that film and spent a lot of time researching. He came to set and he was ready to work hard and all his ducks were in a row."
Leo has been nominated for five acting Oscars -- the first, in '93, for Best Supporting Actor ("Gilbert Grape") and four for Best Actor ("The Aviator," "Blood Diamond," "The Wolf of Wall Street," and "The Revenant"). He was also up as a producer for "The Wolf of Wall Street." This year, Leo is the Oscar favorite but we'll see what happens on February 28. For a minute there, Johnny seemed like he might be in the running for "Black Mass," but that did not pan out. Maybe that's what happens when you "torture" Leo -- karma takes his side.
