What's New on TV, Netflix, Digital, and DVD/Blu-ray This Week: January 11-17 ~ amazing movies

New on DVD and Blu-ray

"The Martian"

Unfortunately, the poster on this one was misleading -- they never actually let us bring Matt Damon home after seeing the movie. (His wife would probably disapprove.) You can, however, take home Ridley Scott's acclaimed Mars mission movie "The Martian" on DVD and Blu-ray starting January 12. The Blu-ray editions include more than 90 minutes of special features, including five "in-world" pieces, and featurettes from the cast, director, and producers. There's also a gag reel, which should be fun.

"Hotel Transylvania 2"
Drac's Pack is back in the sequel to "Hotel Transylvania," as they put the son of Mavis and Johnny through a "monster-in-training" boot camp to bring out his vampire side. The DVD, out January 12, includes feature commentary with the director and vocal cast, plus Fifth Harmony's music video. The Blu-ray also includes deleted scenes, a sing-along, and five behind-the-scenes featurettes.

"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead"
Tim Roth and Gary Oldman are the titular Shakespeare characters in this brilliant retelling of "Hamlet" from the perspective of the two ill-fated sidekicks. Believe it or not, the movie is now celebrating its 25th anniversary, and to celebrate the milestone, it will be released on Blu-ray for the first time. Watch it on DVD, Blu-ray, or Digital on January 12. Don't miss this absolute classic.

New Video on Demand, Rental Streaming, and Digital Only

"The Submarine Kid"
Finn Wittrock ("American Horror Story") co-wrote the script for this timely film about a U.S. Marine (Wittrock) who returns home from his third difficult tour and struggles to acclimate back into civilian life. Military veterans worked in front of and behind the camera to create the drama, which co-stars Emilie de Ravin ("Once Upon a Time'). "The Submarine Kid" is out on Digital HD and On Demand January 12 . Check out this exclusive clip with Wittrock and de Ravin:

"Black Mass"
Johnny Depp goes full Southie as Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger in this star-studded crime drama from director Scott Cooper. There's Joel Edgerton as FBI Agent John Connolly; Benedict Cumberbatch as Whitey's brother, State Senator Billy Bulger; Jesse Plemons as Whitey's main henchman, Kevin Weeks; plus Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, and more. The Digital HD release is January 12, but you'll have to wait for February 16 for the discs.

"Goosebumps"
Jack Black stars in this fun family film, based on the worldwide best-selling books by R.L. Stine. When Zach (Dylan Minnette) unwittingly unleashes magical monsters on the town, he must team with his new friends Champ (Ryan Lee), Hannah (Odeya Rush), and Stine (Jack Black) to send the ghouls back where they came from. "Goosebumps" makes its Digital HD debut on January 12; special features include an alternate opening, an alternate ending, deleted scenes, a blooper reel, and more. The Blu-ray and DVD will follow on January 26.

"Parks and Recreation"

Sing "Byeeeee, Bye, Li'l Sebastian" all over again with the cast of "Parks & Rec" as you rewatch the final season, Season 7, on Netflix. Streaming begins January 13. Nostalgia begins immediately.

"Degrassi: The Next Class"
Season 1 of this Netflix original series starts January 15; it's a continuation of the popular Canadian high school drama, including "Degrassi" favorites like Olivia Scriven (Maya), Lyle Lettau (Tristan), and Ana Golja (Zoe), while welcoming five new faces: Amir Bageria as Baaz Nahir, Soma Bhatia as Goldi Nahir, Jamie Bloch as Yael Baron, Chelsea Clark as Esme Song, and Dante Scott as Vijay Maraj.

"The Overnight"
Adam Scott ("Parks & Rec") and Taylor Schilling ("Orange Is the New Black") star in this 2015 comedy available on Netflix January 15. The duo play a couple who move with their young son to Los Angeles and meet a mysterious new family at a local park. A family "playdate" with these new friends (played by Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche) and their son becomes increasingly bizarre as the night goes on.

TV Worth Watching

"Colony" (Thursday on USA Network at 10 p.m.)

"Lost" meets "The Walking Dead" in this new USA series from Carlton Cuse and Ryan J. Condal, starring Josh "Sawyer" Holloway and Sarah "Lori" Wayne Callies. The 10 episodes of Season 1 start January 14, with the dystopian sci-fi story set in a not-too-distant future Los Angeles. The city has been occupied by outside forces, dividing the residents -- some have collaborated with the occupation, while others are rebelling and suffering the consequences. Former FBI agent Will Bowman (Holloway) and his wife, Katie (Callies) struggle with how to proceed when separated from their son during the invasion. (Should we scream for "Caaaaarl" or "Waaaaalt"?)

"Shadowhunters" (Tuesday on Freeform at 9 p.m.)
Freeform (formerly ABC Family) is launching this new series based on "The Mortal Instruments" novels on January 12. Katherine McNamara stars as Clary Fray, who learns that she is a Shadowhunter -- a human-angel hybrid that hunts demons -- after her mother is abducted by a demon. This story may ring a bell if you watched (or just heard of) the 2013 film, "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones," starring Lily Collins.

"Billions" (Sunday on Showtime at 10 p.m.)
Damien Lewis is returning to Showtime, this time as a hedge fund billionaire. His character is a charming 9/11 survivor and seems like a charitable, generous guy -- but in reality he's a criminal thwarting justice. More moral ambiguity for Brody! Paul Giamatti co-stars as the ruthless U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York who has a particular distaste for wealthy criminals who try to buy their way out of justice. So you can imagine how this is going to play out, but watch the 12 Season 1 episodes play out starting January 17.
