The astronaut mourned the musician on Twitter, where he posted a message praising Bowie for his pioneering place in pop culture history. "Ashes to ashes, dust to stardust," Hadfield wrote. "Your brilliance inspired us all. Goodbye Starman."

Though Hadfield himself didn't re-post his "Space Oddity" video, many other media outlets did, and it's not hard to see why: The commander's poignant take on the iconic song was reportedly one of Bowie's favorite cover versions of the tune. When Hadfield first posted the song in 2013, rights issues briefly took it offline; thanks to Bowie's vocal support of the cover, it eventually returned YouTube. (The video's description now reads, in part, "Rest in peace, Starman.")Check it out again below. RIP, Bowie. The stars indeed look very different today.
