According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney and Lucasfilm have already seen more than 2,500 people read for the role, either in person or via video audition. That's a jaw-dropping number of candidates, and THR rightly notes that the insanely-detailed process is "what some are calling the widest casting search ever." No kidding.
The lucrative part is that of a young Han Solo (played by Harrison Ford in the original "Star Wars" trilogy, as well as this month's "The Force Awakens"), though of course, no details about the story have been revealed, so it's not clear just how young producers are looking for. THR reports that interested actors range in age from 16-year-old Chandler Riggs ("The Walking Dead") to 34-year-old Rami Malek ("Mr. Robot"), but adds that "sources say the 'sweet spot' seems to be the mid-20s."
"The casting team is said to be looking for someone who looks at least a bit like a young Ford (now 73, he was 35 when the original 'Star Wars' was released) and can be funny and charming as well as handle the expected action scenes," the trade notes. "A few young comedians have been asked to read."
Recognizable names who have thrown their hat in the ring include Dave Franco, Miles Teller, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Nick Robinson ("Jurassic World"), Tom Felton, Ed Westwick, Logan Lerman, and Ansel Elgort -- "among many, many others," the trade writes. And plenty of lesser-known film and TV stars are vying for the coveted role, too.
Will producers find who they're looking for, or do they need expand their search to a galaxy far, far away? Only time will tell, though production isn't scheduled to start until January 2017, so they have some time to get things right. May the Force be with them.
The flick is set for release on May 25, 2018.
