Matt Damon Previews the 'Tortured' Jason Bourne of 'Bourne 5'

Matt Damon's Jason Bourne is resurfacing in 2016 in a movie that will most likely be called "The Bourne [Something]" but for now is just "Bourne 5." It's the fourth movie for Damon's Bourne, reuniting him with director Paul Greengrass and (apparently?) gently stepping past Jeremy Renner's 2012 movie "The Bourne Legacy."

Entertainment Weekly shared the first official photo from "Bourne 5" -- that's basically it above -- which tells us nothing about what's ahead, other than more intense expressions and shades of dark blue and black. However, Damon did share some new details and reiterated the few things we had already heard about the plot.

"Bourne 5" is meant to pick up 12 years after Jason Bourne's disappearance in "The Bourne Ultimatum," which came out in 2007 but was set in 2004. So it's not like the story will immediately pick up the action and we're all meant to pretend Damon has not aged and time has not gone by. "We find him in a dark and tortured place," the actor told EW of Bourne, adding that the world around him will look very familiar to modern audiences. "There's been the financial collapse, the great recession, all these issues of cyberwarfare and civil liberties."

That sounds close to what Damon said last summer, when he told Buzzfeed, "Without giving too much of it away, it's Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy. [...] We're starting in Greece, you know, the beginning of democracy. And the movie ends in Las Vegas, the most grotesque incarnation of...." He reportedly finished that thought with a laugh.

Principal photography started back in September, and that's when producer Frank Marshall shared that shirtless photo of buff Bourne/Damon on set. The new movie is meant to bring back Julia Stiles as Nicky Parsons, with fresh faces including Alicia Vikander, Tommy Lee Jones, and Vincent Cassel.

The latest "Bourne" sequel -- whatever it will be called -- is scheduled to open July 29, 2016.
