In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Hamill chatted about not spilling intel about the films, and how that's been the protocol pretty much ever since he joined the fantasy series way back in 1977. Things really came to a head with 1980's "The Empire Strikes Back," though, especially with the revelation that Darth Vader is Luke's father.
"I'm good about keeping secrets," Hamill told the magazine. "I'm proud of the fact that I knew a year and a half before anybody else that he was actually dad-Vader. I didn't even tell Harrison [Ford], or my wife, ... because ['Empire Strikes Back' director] Irvin Kershner said 'I know something, I'm going to tell you. George [Lucas] knows, I know and now I'm gonna tell you, and if it leaks, we'll know it's you.'"
That's a pretty intense secret to carry around -- Hamill called it "a mind-boggling plot twist" -- but it turns out that "The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams has some mysterious tricks up his sleeve, too.
"Now it's happening all over again," Hamill said of the run-up to the release of "Awakens." "I'm not even authorized to tell you I'm in 'Episode VII.' It's all secret."
While it isn't technically a secret that Hamill is in "The Force Awakens," he really hasn't talked about the flick at all, and has been noticeably absent from promotional materials. Is Luke Skywalker's big surprise really more shocking than "I am your father"? It will be pretty hard to top that, but we can't wait to find out.
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits theaters on December 18.
