Charlie Sheen Confirms He's HIV-Positive on 'Today Show'

Actor Charlie Sheen Makes Announcement On Today Show During Interview With Matt Lauer
Charlie Sheen confirmed reports that he is HIV-positive on the "Today Show" this morning.

"It's a hard three letters to absorb. It's a turning point in one's life," he told host Matt Lauer.

The 50-year-old actor said he was announcing the news to end extortion attempts. He admitted that he was diagnosed four years ago and that since then, he's paid over $10 million to keep his illness a secret.

"What people forget is that it's money taken from my children," he said. "I trusted them and they were deep in my inner circle, and I thought they could be helpful. My trust turned to their treason."

Sheen is currently healthy. His doctor, Dr. Robert Huizenga, an associate professor of clinical medicine at UCLA, said they are more concerned about Sheen relapsing into substance abuse and not taking his medications.

Sheen has told both of this ex-wives, Denise Richards and Brooke Mueller, as well as his eldest daughter. He hopes by coming forward, he will help dispel the stigma of having HIV.

"I have a responsibility now to better myself and to help a lot of other people and hopefully with what we're doing today others will come forward and say, thanks Charlie."
