'Twilight' Is Swapping Genders for Its 10th Anniversary Edition

twilight, twilight 10th anniversary, life and death: twilight reimagined, gender swap"Twilight" fans will find a new story when they purchase the 10th anniversary edition of Stephenie Meyer's story -- but it doesn't star Bella and Edward.

Instead, Meyers penned a new tale that retells "Twilight" from a gender-swapped point of view, with a boy named Beau subbing in for Bella, and a girl vampire called Edythe replacing Edward. It's the same story, but now, Beau must decide if he's #TeamEdythe or #TeamJulie (yup, werewolf Jacob is gender-swapped, too) in "Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined."

In an interview with "Good Morning America," Meyer explained that for the book's 10th anniversary, she "wanted to do something fun" for fans. While her publisher suggested writing a new forward, Meyer said she decided to do "something more interesting," and took a cue from Bella herself, who Meyer said was unfairly characterized as a "damsel in distress."

"It's always bothered me a little bit because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be ... in distress. We don't have the powers," Meyer told "GMA." "I thought, 'What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does,' and, you know, it's about the same."

Despite the gender switcheroo, Meyer said the essence of "Twilight" remains in the new, 400-page story.

"... [I]t really is the same story because it's just a love story and it doesn't matter who's the boy and who's the girl, it still works out," the author explained.

"Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined" hits shelves today.
