SDCC 2015: Guillermo del Toro Says 'Crimson Peak' Is the Most Terrifying Love Story Ever Made

If director Guillermo del Toro has his way, his new film "Crimson Peak" will make you scream and swoon.

The filmmaker brought his new gothic horror thriller, along with stars Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska, and Jessica Chastain, to Comic-Con this past weekend, where he screened intense new footage that reveals "Peak" to be as terrifying as it is romantic.

"It's a gothic romance," del Toro told Moviefone in our exclusive interview. "The romance actually starts after [the characters] get married -- at the same time, you're starting to discover the horror."

For del Toro, the film is more than a beautiful-looking haunted house movie. It's a love story, with strong thematic ties that play out in the marriage between Edith (Wasikowska) and Thomas (Hiddleston).

"It's like any other marriage," del Toro said, "you discover things you don't like and then you discover the things that you really like. At the end of the movie, you [will] have the sense that you have witnessed a very painful, beautiful love story."

But the director is quick to stress that fans looking to go home scared sh!@less will also get their money's worth. In fact, he is so excited about "Peak" that it already ranks in the "top three films" that he has ever made.

"It's a throwback to lavish, gorgeous productions -- nevertheless, it's gonna have scary, spooky stuff," he said. "It's rooted in great characters and a great story. It's the most beautiful movie I've ever done."

Audiences will get to see for themselves when "Crimson Peak" hits theaters Oct. 16
