According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is working on a flick called "Genies," which would delve into the world of the titular big blue guy, who was voiced by Robin Williams in the 1992 original. The trade describes the prequel as "a live-action comedy adventure" that will "reveal how Aladdin's Genie ended up enslaved in the lamp."
And the prequel isn't the only trick Disney has up its sleeve: According to THR, the plan is for that flick to then lead to a live-action remake of "Aladdin" itself. It's unclear just how far off those plans are, though, since "Genies" still needs to get off the ground.
As of right now, the prequel project has writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift attached to pen the screenplay. Sadly, the late Williams won't be back to reprise his iconic Genie performance, and whoever takes on the role has some huge shoes to fill. We're curious to see who Disney and co. can find to take on such a beloved character -- and whether "Genies" will be as magical as "Aladdin."
Stay tuned.
