Brie Larson, Russell Crowe May Join 'Kong: Skull Island'

Coach - Presentation - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Fall 2015After losing a couple of key players, casting for "Kong: Skull Island" is back on track.

Deadline reports that Brie Larson ("Trainwreck") is currently in talks to take the female lead in the flick, which focuses on the mysterious titular island where King Kong is captured. Larson would join "Avengers" star Tom Hiddleston as one of the headliners of the flick.

And that's not all. According to Deadline, there's another big name circling the project: Oscar winner Russell Crowe, who's being courted to play one of two remaining leading male roles. Both J.K. Simmons and Michael Keaton had previously been attached to the film, but had to drop out over scheduling issues (no doubt due to their own awards success this past year); Crowe would likely take over one of those roles, though no casting breakdowns have been made available.

Of course, another sticking point with the production is that it's still waiting on a new script, and Crowe's involvement in the project hinges on what that screenplay entails. The film's release date is rapidly approaching, and production is going to need to start soon (Deadline says it's aiming to begin filming either later this year or in early 2016) if it's going to make that deadline.

Stay tuned to see how things shake out. "Kong: Skull Island" is due in theaters on March 10, 2017.
