The upcoming second installment of FX and Ryan Murphy's critically-acclaimed series "American Crime Story," centered this time around the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina (and specifically the federal government's much-maligned response to the disaster), has announced its first official casting, adding an Oscar nominee to its sure-to-be-impressive roster.
Annette Bening will join the ensemble in the role of Kathleen Blanco, the governor of Louisiana when the hurricane hit in August 2005, who headed the state from 2004 to 2008. Bening's part is the first one confirmed for the series, which is still basking in the success of its first season, 2016's "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story."
"The People v. O.J." went on to win a boatload of awards, including nine Emmys, two Golden Globes, and a Producers Guild of America Award. With such an incredible cast -- including Emmy winners Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown, and Courtney B. Vance -- and Murphy's penchant for working with the same actors on different projects (including Bening, who starred in Murphy's feature directorial debut, 2006's "Running With Scissors"), it would seem like a no-brainer for some or all of the above to join the Katrina season, too. Though there's been no official word yet from Murphy or FX, both Paulson and fellow "O.J." star John Travolta have both expressed interest in signing on for season two.
Stay tuned to see who else the series snags to star. "Katrina: American Crime Story" will debut on FX sometime in 2018.
